Regina Ilyinichna Spektor was born in Moscow in 1980 and is a singer, songwriter and pianist. She began her musical journey by learning classical piano when she was 6 and 3 years later, she and her family moved to the US where she continued her classical training. Her musical style falls under the genres of indie pop and anti-folk (a genre that seeks to subvert the earnestness of politically charged 1960s folk music) but also includes elements of folk, punk, rock, Jewish, Russian, hip hop, jazz, and classical music. She said in an interview, “It doesn't feel natural for me to write some diary type song. I want to write a classic like Yesterday but weird songs about meatballs in refrigerators come into my head – I can't help it.” She’s also renowned for her broad vocal range and for using unorthodox vocal techniques. She’s had a stellar career with 7 studio albums, 1 live album, 1 compilation album, 4 extended plays, and 13 singles. She’s received many accolades including a BMI Streaming Media Award, a Shortlist Music Prize nomination, a MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best Art Direction, and a Grammy Award nomination for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
